Back in the days when Marvel did New Universe, there was an intriguing comic called Strikeforce Morituri (For Those who are about to Die.) Characters were given superpowers in order to defend the earth. The process of getting superpowers had a very terrible side effect: They would die, explosively. But, it took awhile so they had a chance to fight the invading aliens.
Would make an excellent video game.
