You are right, the firmware cannot be patched to enable UHD blu-ray according to Sony.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House, who spoke with The Guardian yesterday, it isn’t possible to add support for UHD discs in ...
This is fake. Sony debunked it.
A 4K Blu-ray drive cost something like $35 and a standard Blu-ray drive cost $18. It is not a $100 difference.
That is such an ignorant excuse for not having 4k blu-ray support. If you buy a phone today, are you going to be happy if it only does phone calls and text and no other extras like apps? Time changes and consoles today does more than just play games like the NES and Genesis days even if it is the primary function. A 4K blu-ray drive only cost like $15 more than the standard blu-ray drive and Sony could have make a 500gb model and include the drive to offset the cost difference and still able ...
It did came from the source. Sony already confirms it to all the media.

Well here's something pretty baffling: Sony's just-announced $400 PlayStation 4 Pro game console, an upgraded and more powerful version of the original PS4, won't be able to play 4K Blu-rays when it ...
All the games shown today on the Pro from Horizon, Watchdog, COD, Mass Effect are not native 4K, they were upscaled. Just a bit of a heads up.
Except almost everyone expected a UHD 4k drive to be included but that is not found on the Pro. I am really upset with this decision by Sony for not including a 4K drive.
By not having a UHD 4k drive in there, I am not so sure.
Man, you were way off on your prediction. The no 4k UHD drive is a failed no matter how you look at it. I was set to get the formerly known as Neo now Pro because of the UHD movie disc playback to supplement better specs for game. There is no incentive now for me. Neogaf is roasting this bone head decision by Sony.
It wasn't removed. It just didn't make the chart.
If the game was being advertised as a AAA game and priced as such, why can't it be in the same category as the other AAA titles? As a matter of fact, the price and smoke and mirror lies made it worst. No doubt the biggest disappointment of this generation.
Other than the Matchmaking issue at launch and is now fixed, MCC delivers everthing that was advertised. One of the best values of this generation.
No Man's Sky is just a big lie and scam altogether.
Great that you got your money back. Hope this is a valuable lesson for you and everyone here that it is not wise to accuse other fan bases of purposely sabotaging a game before release and discrediting reviewers that are not found of the game.

SpaceRanger, so more = better quality? I have had heard it all.
According to your analogy, Wii had the best and most amazing game lineup of last generation with 10x more shovelware titles than both PS3 and Xbox 360 combined. What are you smoking man?
SpaceRanger, MP was free on PS3 last generation and PS plus paid service main component was it's monthly selection of games, so what other comparison were you comparing between plus of last gen and now if it isn't about the free games in the vault?
You must be joking, right? The PS3 defintely have better monthly PS plus titles than what is on PS4 at this time since launch.
Look no further than proof from wiki for the list.

Thought it was a fake but this pretty much confirms it is the real deal.
Why no Optical audio out though? I have a $250 A50 headset and pretty much this slim model will be make it a no go for many 7.1 headset owners. Bad move on Sony's part in my opinion.
4K gaming is misleading if most of the current and new games can't hit that target natively. There is no two ways about it. It is like buying a bluray player but it can only upscale DVD quality 576p movies to a 1080p LCD and can't play any Bluray disc natively at 1080p. Sony should not be advertising the Pro as a 4K gaming console. Sony should be advertising it is a more powerful PS4 for games and 4K media streaming.
