It's under contract with Sony. To be funded and backed by Sony. With help from Sony's first party devs to be designed exactly for the PS3's weird ass architecture.
I do believe Sony's gonna keep this, much the same way the 360 has that exclusive GTA4 DLC, because Microsoft paid good money for it.

Sony's controller looked like a dildo, and Natal isn't something that would persuade me to purchase an Xbox.

Battlefield 2 did unlockable guns and ranks back in 2005. CoD4 only took that idea and added perks to it.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The Battlefield series of games are quite possibily the funnest games I've ever played, and they have a relatively high player count.
If they do this right, it'll be a massive success.
I hope neither this nor motion controls is the future of gaming. :/
