Yeah, it all boils down to the matchmaking, and leaving the matches open for other people to come in, once a spot is available. I don't mind small player counts for a total, but when I have a team of 5 and the opposing team only has 1 person left, then that makes for a very boring game.
I would say it was more predominantly third parties abandoning it. Which is part of the reason why you didn't see big titles re-releasing on the PSN store when PSP games first debuted on it. Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts is a prime example.
The way they handed out exp. points was a crime. If your mod didn't get on the Top 3, it would take you FOREVER to get those two gold trophies. LBP became infamous for it's "share" type trophies, but MNR took it a whole new level of taking you AWAY from the enjoyment of just racing.

This will be the first collection that I'm going to definately buy. And the ironic thing is, out of all the other HD collections already available of whom I don't own the PS2 originals (God of War, ICO); this is the only one where I actually have all 3 original PS2 games. I even have the limited edition DVD that included all the cutscenes from all 3 games.
