If I hadn't played it before now, I'd be buying it as soon as possible and playing it. It's one of the best games ever made. The only reason I could see for not wanting to play it yet is if you didn't enjoy playing great games.
It might have been disappointing to some people, but there is no way it is one of the worst games of the year.

Half Life 1 and 2 did amazing sales, Half Life 2 has sold over 12 million copies for instance. The Left 4 Dead series has sold over 11 million. If the console launches with Half Life 3 exclusively for that console, it will help sell it.
Valve are not unknowns. And there is this thing called 'Marketing' that helps sell products to people who are not aware of products that are being sold.
Valve also make games as well. And they will likely get more studios to make games for it. Sony,MS and Nintendo aren't the only ones capable of getting exclusives.
Considering that he's the president of the company I'd say that won't be happening anytime soon. While I think he does talk up his games a lot, he's not really much different from many other people who are making games and proud of them.
And his comments in interviews tend to get cherry picked for headlines, so it makes him look worse.
