But ATi are just better Hardware than Nvidia and I have used them for years (apart from a 6800gt...was crap) and I never had a problem. Ati cards run cooler, quieter and cost less for more power than Nvidia in my experiance, and when you hit higher resolutions and jack up the AA and AF, they smoke Nvidia.

I have a nice rig for your information (4 gig ram quad core 2.4 ghx cpu, ati 4870 gfx card) and yes, I tried many different distros, Ubuntu, open Suse, Sabayon (which is really nice) but no matter how complete they seemed to be, the graphics drivers were crap on ervery one. Using their 'suggested' proprietary driver or the latest build from AMD/ATi.
Scoff all you want but I did GET TEARING WHEN DRAGGING REGULAR WINDOWS FAST ACROSS SCREEN.
And compiz, well I got that runnng sweet b...
Realise after install that Linux graphics drivers SUCK BALLS and you have screen tearing even when dragging 2d windows across the screen. And that with a monster gfx card.

I'm intrigued by the free 'alternative' and i love when I get compiz fully working.
(which I never quite seem to get right, videos play laggy when it's on )
But I always end up uninstalling it, as I'm pretty computer savvy, but nowhere near good enough to make linux play nice.
It's so long winded and complicated. Unless you understand the os and terminal usage, you are stuck with boring a$$ install and setup, and end up with ubuntu or some other distro with allot of uninspir...

I don't know if it is affecting anything, but I can't get rid of it no matter what I try. And I'm not about to sit through reinstall right this minute.

.but the os itself is a little quicker. Not sure about gaming yet as only game I have tried is Quake live, and that will run on anything well, the engine is so old.

I have to say (AGAIN) the graphics chip in the ps3 is wank.
Not as sharp and black levels are not as good as the ati.
Now this bugs me as, on the whole, the 360 is a POS IMO,
but I do like the rendering of colour on it. And I'll admit that.
And before any crying ps3 fan boy try's to cry about contrast and brightness settings......just don't. This is a hardware level issue.
The ps2 had great black levels and colour intensity and the xbox1 did not.

I have the same card and it kicks 4ss. I have always used ATi and they are great cards. The one exception was a 6800gt I had and it sucked.
Ran hot, and was loud as hell to the point were I had to install my own cooling.
