I'm afraid Dragon Age is a linear, commercially driven game franchise masquerading as an RPG, designed to appeal to the casual gamer (wider audience).
Despite excellent story-telling and narrative, don't be fooled by the RPG tag. Origins was more like an interactive book than an RPG and DA 2 looks like being no different.
These games could have been absolute classics if Bioware had stuck to their principles and developed open worlds with exploration ...
The Fable series is cartoony, goofy, linear, and has shallow RPG gameplay mechanics - a disappointing RPG that would be right at home on the Wii.
Why peter molyneux has gone down the casual gaming route after promising and failing to deliver an RPG masterpiece is a complete mystery as he & Lionhead Studios are undoubtedly very talented and capable of doing so.
Of course financial success has been forthcoming but then that's the case with many disapp...
In light of the recent mini-trend for watered down, linear, shallow RPG's, 2 distinct RPG categories should be created: RPG-A (Adult RPG) and RPG-C (Casual RPG).
Two Worlds Two online multiplayer looks interesting - out on Sept 17 in the UK, Oct 5 in the States....

linear gameplay, shallow RPG gameplay mechanics - this isn't what's expected of an RPG - it's more like an interactive book.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was a true next gen RPG - choice of camera perspective, in-depth character choices and skill trees, open world, great graphics, large scale and scope... etc .... which came out early 2006.
Nearly 5 years on and this franchise is nowhere near Oblivion's quality in any aspect whatsoever - what...
simple: Not making Half-life 3, 4 & 5.
is: 'Zombies are incredibly slow and burn easily' one of them ?
linear gameplay, shallow RPG gameplay mechanics - Dragons Age Origins all over again. This isn't really an RPG - it's more like an interactive book !

There's nothing in-depth let alone insightful about this 'preview' at all - everything mentioned here has been common knowledge for months and could have been lifted from any other preview/hands-on.
Any RPG preview (in-depth or not) should cover answers to basic questions such as:
how many hours gameplay will the game provide ?
how long does the main quest take ?
what are the difficulty options ?
are there side quests/ho...
This is great news - a normal adult orientated RPG as opposed to altered, watered down, linear & shallow hybrids such as Dragons Age churned out in the name of appealing to a younger & wider audience (casual gamer).
Thank GOD for Arcania 4, Two Worlds 2, Fallout NV, Elder Scrolls V ...and the rest !
linear gameplay, shallow mechanics - Dragons Age Origins all over again. There's no way this an RPG. It's like playing an interactive book !

the biggest consideration when contemplating buying a 3D or super HD TV is that they all use insane amounts of electricity.
DA:O is a very good game which is fine and it's sold very well which is fine. But if Bioware had made an RPG masterpiece (their area of expertise after all) in the mould of Oblivion/Fallout 3 (next gen not old skool RPG's) then it would have sold much more and they would have had far greater critical acclaim as well.
According to NPD figures DA:O has sold around 3.5 million to date yet Fallout 3 sold 4.7 million just on launch day alone and won many more industry awar...
why ARE you explaining this ? it's not because you're angry & confused is it ?
I was agreeing with you mostly - but your 'dying breed' comment that's clearly in reference to the 'adult' RPG's I'm commenting on is ill informed as is the "millions of others have no desire to micro manage every single item and scroll though reams of text and items" comment. There are millions who don't, sure, but there are also millions who d...
you said you don't fit into a box... can't you remember what you wrote 10 mins ago ? it's there in black and white right in front of you, three up.
so why are games like Fallout New Vegas, Two Worlds Two, Arcania 4, Dungeon Siege III, Hunted, Diablo 3, Deus Ex, The witcher 2, Torchlight 2, White Knight Chronicles 2, Final Fantasy Versus XII and Elder scrolls V being produced ?
There's never ever been so many RPG's to look forward to, so you clearly fit into the 'not very well informed' box.
And it's not about being 'hardcore' or 'casual', its about 'adult', ...
I'm afraid Dragon Age (and Mass effect to a large extent) is a dumbed down, linear, commercially driven *casual game franchise masquerading as an RPG and this is fooling reviewers and gamers alike !
Despite excellent production values and story-telling, don't be duped by the RPG tag. Origins is more interactive audio-visual book than a game, let alone an RPG, and Dragon Age 2 looks set to follow suit.

Of course financial success has been forthcoming but then that's the case with many poor games such as movie...
