I don't think it's killed the franchise. What Sega needs to do is sell the license to a publisher that won't give the game to just whoever. And, if they do decide to keep the franchise, they need to scrutinize the next dev like crazy. I don't see Gearbox getting many more licensed games after the atrocities that were Duke Nukem Forever and the steamin pile that Colonial Marines became.
This is exactly the reason that I am switching over to PS4 next gen. I was a PS2 gamer last gen, bought an Xbox for Halo and a few other games, and started this gen with an Xbox 360. I have to say that I have been happy with the 360 as well as my PS3 (once I bought it). I have to say though that as this gen wore on, I have gotten the most use out of my PS3 because of the reason you stated. GAMES!
