IMO linearity was what made Metro 2033 excellent. The best story based FPS have always been linear or at the max have parallels or time based intercutting depending on the plot.
Think Half Life (1,2, Ep1/2), Bioshock, Undying, Portal (strategic gameplay but linear), Halo1, MW1
