To me it just seems that Nintendo was right, and that next gen's leap wasn't ever going to be as serious an issue as was assumed. Given what we assume Steambox does, and the numerous competitors, MS isn't really going to lose out on pixel density.
Where they will lose, and have already lost, is on trust with the gamer.
And that was dropped the second they finished their E3 presentation.

3rd Person shooter style action games are already getting quite tiring, i don't know why anybody still plays FPS's, and i think the 2d platformer was quite heavily saturated last gen.
Iwata is right, but it doesn't look as though even Nintendo have the answer for what should be the replacement. I would've guessed maybe Nintendo was banking on RTS interest exploding on home consoles, since the WII U controller is born for it, but who knows if that'll happe...
