It doesn't patch when you're using backups; but since they are just backups, just insert your original disk and it will patch up to the current version. Then you can continue using your backups.
Publishers will just release more updates for network play to discourage piracy, but for those that don't go online, I don't think it matters much (e.g. look at Xbox, Wii).

No. Not going to fall for it. L4D2 was rushed. Valve, you killed the L4D1 community, you sold out. And to this day, I still feel L4D is the better version.
