So author asked for the open world to be dialed back but also wants:
Flying an airship
Chocobo racing
Mounted combat

I am all for open world personally, not sure airship can work in FF12 or Dragon Quest 11 style of world design

"What a beautiful looking game. Shadow is proof that generations are pretty much meaningless. Next gen, as far as visuals, is already here, and I don’t care what anybody says. I never say this, because it always proves laughable ten years down the line, but here is a game that looks almost as real as real."

It is a good looking game yes, but to say 'next gen is already here? The entire Tomb Raider reboot was developed with 7th gen system, which is apparent in ...

Industry goes through its trends and phases. I doubt large scale marketing events will be discontinued long term in post COVID world, every other industry is already looking how to bring them back. Gaming will be no different. Here's hoping if it comes back, it will be in better form. I personally enjoy it. There's something to be said about the reveal factor, showmanship, stage presence and hearing people's reaction.
What I don't miss is months and months of PR sile...

I found myself unable to finish the game. Despite the great visuals, and interesting premise, I couldn't stand the gameplay.

I am actually totally okay with that. Once I go through generational upgrade, I don't really use the old system much, if at all. For people that do, by all means, go for it, but I think it is minority (if the SONY stats are to be correct). Looking ahead and innovation, shouldn't be held back by the past (imo).

you could probably insert any Ubisoft title into this "Will ______ Break the Franchise's cycle of repetitive gameplay?"

Oh my bad. I didn't read the latter part.
In any case, that's a fair and valid opinion. I think often times games with more realistic approach can be let down when compared to more free game design approach enabled by magic, fast travels, flying etc.
I personally prefer a more grounded approach, but each to their own.

The author compares two Open World games, which is fair, however comparing one that tries to maintain elements of realism, with one that suspends the disbelief of realism with elements of fantasy/flying/magic. I feel perhaps if comparisons were to be made, then why not stack it against RDR2 or Horizon ZD.

I can't imagine it being a very large stake. It does say minority stake, but with Fortnite alone cashing in over 300million at its peak (2018), this is probably a very small number.

I find it off putting that AC franchise is slowly becoming more of a fantasy-based RPG, than grounded stealth-action game. The game is loosing its identity, and it's harder for me each time to justify going back to it.

Is there evidence of that ? Seems these guys are quite credible, but I wouldn't pressume either way without having full knowledge.

A pub my parents owned when I was a kid, had an arcade version of this. I remember playing Tifa, who had this auto-tracking fireball skill. Very OP. Kept winning all the fights.

This is a great party (3-4people) game. There really isn't much games of such production value for more than 2 people to play together in short sessions and feel like they've got somewhere.

I platinumed the game, and enjoyed it at the release, however it is such deeply flawed game, that despite its patches and DLC's it still feels fundementally 'unbaked'.

Really good read and fair points raised.

It's all great to monetise the platform, but there's something to be said about a game that its DLC's cost uwpards of 10-15 times the price of the original game.

They're not all essential for the SIMS experience, but it can feel very dishonest for new buyers who might feel like they won't get the full experience unless they get xyz.

It's rather inmature to expect people to have the same level of skillset as you have, and as such Developers would often opt in for variable difficulties,
If that's an option then, why criticize anyone for choosing it. The 'get gut' mentality is rather toxic and skewd

I think we won't see another TR game until mid-late of next generation. I certainly hope the devs will take time to design new concepts and draw new plot points. The article/video makes some interesting points, specifically in regards to vision(telegraphing), skill points and exploration. I still feel the rebooted TR games failed to create a sense of awe in a way of map exploration.

This is such a old time discussion, and really it feels like comparing apples to oranges. It's hardly the case of which one is better, since everyone will have their preference and steer towards it. Both can be very functional and excellent at what they do if designed right.
