It is a good idea. My mom is getting a PS4 soon (she is big into Indie games, currently Don't Starve) and she wanted a Vita so this might work out for her.

Maybe they don't have a 3D artist and are using what they have.
And 3D animated stuff can look worse if the animator is bad. (Speaking from experience)
More tactical. I loved the game, during the beta i playrd it non stop, but then everyone started play Artillery and there where no more fights really. Just mortars from halfway across the map.
