Alas, no. Just an EarthBound fan, haha.

I'm ashamed that I did not mention this scene, completely forgot. Even when you succeed at it, you STILL have a fight with a chicken.

I mean I like Game Grumps, no doubt, but I tried to stay on the relatively "obscure" side. I doubt Game Grumps needs the recognition. That said, these are still among my favorites.

I understood that reference

The funny thing about a top 10 best Metroid games article is that a top 10 worst Metroid games article would have almost the same entries.

I do have to comment though... "extreme SJW pandering"? What? I'm not sure I follow the logic train here. Other M's story is routinely criticized by people who you would call SJWs for writing Samus incredibly poorly. Jeez, us "SJWs" can't catch a break!

And nothing wrong with that. Play in the way that makes it the most fun!

And I applaud the Pocket Rumble designers for taking the initiative to make games of that style, certainly.

As the author, to clarify, I do not feel that power limits creativity - simply that things that would otherwise encourage handheld game developers to deviate. Ie, would Link's Awakening have the inventory system that it has if it had SNES controls? Or even one extra button?

You make a good point that the Switch doesn't suffer from having inferior versions of console concepts; the Switch was more framing for the issue of devoted handhelds possibly being at risk, and ...

I believe you misunderstand the article. At no point does the article claiming that handheld consoles being more powerful is a bad thing, so that analogy doesn't make any sense.

Though to respond to that, phone booths are a great asset when people's phone dies or is stolen. This is not "smart phones are bad," it's "there are aspects of phone booths that have merit."

Thing is though, I am not claiming that power makes for bad games, nor that limitations make for good games. Either could happen or not happen. Of course developers can still be creative with their games on the most powerful consoles, but not out of a desire to find a way to circumvent a limitation of the platform they are on. But I guess my question would be, how does Liberty City Stories compare to Grand Theft Auto III? Does it have value besides portability? It's ultimately the issue o...

But despite being weaker than Switch and Vita, it still has some of the problems that I find. There's a blurring of lines between handheld and console. And while I understand that power gives more tools, the tools already exist. For me, the value of a handheld is not getting a console experience on it, but rather that I can play something unique, neat, and designed specifically for that system. A good comparison would be Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Chinato...

It is less about what developers can do and more about what they must do. Ie, on the Game Boy, you must make a control scheme that works with four buttons and a d-pad. On the 3DS, you CAN do that, but you do not have to. I'd love to see some more indie games made that could be possible on, say, the original Game Boy. Only grey/white or green/white, no more than four buttons + d-pad, screen limitations, object limits, etc. I love Shovel Knight as much as the next person (one of my favorite...

I agree; I even say so in the article. But those merits are not without cost. It's entirely give and take; by having more power and capabilities, developers have fewer restrictions on what they can do.

@NapalmSanctuary No offense taken. And yeah, I think without an easy mode, developers feel a little too nervous to make certain games too challenging.

3133d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

I don't entirely agree. On one hand they certainly bungled the series with localization; on the other hand, I'm wary of a Mother 4 that isn't made by Itoi. It just isn't the same without him.

yes it is

How so? Ocarina of Time is a very good game, but there ARE other great Zelda games, you realize. That said, a person not having a certain popular game as one of their favorite games is not, and certainly should not, be what determines a person's credibility. I would argue that putting your stock of someone into whether they like the games that you like is in and of itself a show of poor credibility.

Consider views beyond your own.

I actually changed the title because it was originally depicted as my favorite game, but I wasn't sure if "my" is acceptable in titles. So it's not intended to be considered better than any of those objectively.

Though I definitely prefer them. Ocarina of Time is actually not a top 10 Zelda for me personally either - not because OoT is bad, just because the lot of the series is so good.

I was actually writing a long response to this, but I lost the text and now I'm too sad to try again. SO I'll just say that EarthBound actually had a pretty robust and innovative handling of "random battles," where enemies are all visible on screen and can be avoided as needed. Chrono Trigger does this too, but it's more set piece. Almost every encounter is in the same place, and unlike EB, there are unavoidable encounters. You also cannot sneak up or get sneaked up on b...

"Being for the player" is obviously buzzwordy, because any decision the three make is ultimately to make money. Most people who make games care about making games, but for many, especially on the publishing side, its more important to make profitable games than good games.

That said, none of those changes that Sony is not looking to enable crossplay for PS4 owners, despite not only it being a desired feature and despite the listed reasons being obviously manufactu...
