Indeed, Microsoft charged from the start back in 2002. This is why it made since for them to continue charging to play online , which was a trap from the start. Saying,To play online you have to pay, but we will add features that will take Xbox live to newer heights. To be honest most of these features I have come to like. So I suppose they would have different consoles for different hardware/software advantages? Would that mean having an Xbox 720 that can display multiple screens? Have another one with windows 8 ect. I assume that the gaming part ( via GPU) would stay the same. Although I would say, if they made the GPU interchangeable, it would surely prolong the consoles life cycle and would essentially be a PC.

I would say that the next Xbox indeed already has multiple CPUs, it is after all based on the 360. I believe it has the 3x ppc cores at 3.2ghz ,with an added 6-8xARM CPU /x86 architecture at 2ghz. Another weaker 2x ARM CPU at 2ghz for other task.This is why I believe they will be able to keep down cost. It will have two gpus, the same ati custom gpu at 500 MHz(48ALU)possibly one of AMD's southern island 7000 series at 1ghz(64ALU).
