It was a failure,... You want to be proud of the quality of your product (and they absolutely succeed in that) but you also want your product to be popular and sell well, and their numbers are the worst ever.
But the concept of necessity here is ridiculous, they could still have another failure. Or you could have a successful console and afterwards something even better cause you improve on it.

Agree. That's why I never buy a console at launch. What I don't get is why people are demanding from Nintendo what they don't from Sony or MS, they had very weak launches too!!!

Good point. But they're all gonna be very different games. How do I know that? Because it's Nintendo and they always deliver on originality, that's why their games are so good.
They're still the same game in appearance, same characters, world setting, but they're not really... Super Mario Galaxy is VERY different than Super Mario 3D World and you can be sure that Odyssey it's gonna be different to both.

A game is never cancel just cause it sucks. Probably they weren't expecting good sales, so the game might still require some investment and they consider wasn't worth the effort. I think Microsoft always try to play safe, they don't take any risks anymore (like in the good old days of the Original Xbox). You look at Sony, a game like Trico is not going to sell at Uncharted numbers, and it was in development hell, but they'll push it anyway, cuz, you know, gives the console var...
