Writing, too. JRPG storytelling is more character-driven and intricately built. Lots of characters with individual arcs that overlap and interweave, the main plot tackles Eastern philosophic staples like life and the nature of existence, what is humanity and what is it's purpose, stuff like that.

It came from the same line of thought as FPS games being called Doom Clones. I *think* when Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest broke ground in the U.S. in '90 and '89 (respectively), they were called console RPGs, since they released on home consoles instead of PCs--geeks and nerds in the 90s were pretty blunt. Right around the Super Nintendo is when we started noticing the design and-or storytelling differences between Western-developed games and Japan-developed games.

Corporate cynicism at its finest.

I don't know the polite words to describe how bad of a game RE6 is--if there are any polite words in the first place. If there were a showpiece for entertainment media produced by committee, it would be Resident Evil 6. It is poorly written, poorly directed, and poorly designed; it is the most cynical corporate annual release that took over AAA gaming in the mid-to-late-seventh console generation.

From what I can tell, Sony only ports the games it has a vested interest in making a franchise. God of War had GOWR ahead of it, and that hyper-boosted interest, so they let GW'18 onto Steam and got a nice surge for their financial report.

The Doctors sold out to EA and actually believed EA would let them have the creative power that they did when Bioware was an independent studio. Then Drew Karpeshyn left when Casey Hudson and Marc Walters got assmad when the script leaked, and changed the plot's framework to "preserve their artistic vision" and subvert expectations. Then the Doctors left after ME3's reception backfired because of the changed ending. Then Casey Hudson left, and the main creative leads started...

That's comparing apples to oranges. CDPR already had years worth of experience working with RED engine when production for 2077 left the drawing board. GSC's X Ray Engine was brand new and proprietary tech with multiple feature layers working together. Hard enough to code by itself, then the devs went in and made it interact with the ODE physics engine after modifying the code to a nightmarish level to keep from tearing the game's assets apart during render.

It's clickbait algorithm abuse. Many gamers know who Stef Joosten is and her projects beyond being Quiet, but the hack writer pumping this dreck article into the ether is betting on keywords to boost the shoddy reporting to something approaching noteworthy. Recognizable figure from games past has a new project in the works? Bank on her (in)famous previous role to drive engagement.

I'd like to see how combat looks with the new graphics. The brutality in Part 2 made up for the meh storyline.

Yes, but that's not what I meant--DS1 had a . In Dark Souls 1, after getting to Firelink Shrine, there are a handful of directions you can go, down to New Londo to get merc'd by ghosts or to the graveyard and crypts to get merc'd by skeletons, but the game directs you towards the Undead Burg by the level design and the enemy positioning. Elden ring does something like that.

I understand that regular everyday people getting into Elden Ring as their first Souls-like are having a tough time of it, but you don't need mods to get the most out of your game. There's an intended path for the game *carefully* hidden in the enconter design, if you're running into a wall again and again, you've probably gone the wrong way.

Sigurn is a BASTARD of a fight. Even if you go in with maxed gear, she's still an hour-long fight when you know what to expect. Fantastic fight and I really hope Sony Santa Monica can do Freya justice in Ragnarok.
