I think the new improvements to the game revitalized the series big time while keeping it rooted to the core gameplay mechanics.

Reviews are gonna be split. When you take the Splinter Cell out of Splinter Cell you have just another game. Much of the unique features of the game are gone. These things happen to be what made Splinter Cell so damn good. Of course this is just my opinion, and this being the game I was most excited for in 2010, it just so happens that I am now equally disappointed. Metro 2033 was one of the funnest games I have played all year. Early in the year, and the game had its faults, but it was damn fun.
I think that's exactly what Ubisoft was going for. Splinter Cell has a pretty big following. This is the Xbox players Metal Gear. Some of these changes are drastic some of the petty. Taking the traditional game mechanics away from the game is one thing. Then taking the traditional game modes like Spies v Mercs is a whole other can of worms. Since Reach is the Story that takes place before H1,H2, H3 I doubt that any new info about that will be in Reach. But who knows.
