E3 is not an industry event for actual game developers/designers/talent (not since 2005). Its focus is on media, fans and consumers that are going to buy a game via RETAIL. MS has never been about games. It has been about selling products to people. Sure they had their "divisions" dedicated to making crap software in the past, but their foundation is $oftware dependent on constant consumer upgrades, so that you NEED them. Now they want to protect their abilities to muscle out anyone else from being able to sell games to you (which will not doubt need updates and new MS related dependencies).
