Well they are already making he money back since 08 that they have invested.
Not even close, If you take a look at how much retailers are making a profit on the consoles for e.g. in the UK, it's close to £4 per unit. Then the retailers will claim 20% VAT. SO overall in the UK the retailers mainly make the profit by claiming back the VAT. Overall MS is Breaking even with each unit sold. Same goes with the PS4.
Edit: I know this since were i work we bought 100 units for each the PS4 and Xb1 from centersoft and Gem wholesale.
Actually it was reported to be beyond MS expectation's, compared to Sony it may not be as good of a launch but the Launch is still a huge success selling over 1 mil in under 24hrs.
There is absolute no difference in 2k14 on both consoles. The run the same resolution and frame rate and looks extremely identical.
SO both are really powerful consoles, except the PS4 is more due to the GGDR5; powerful and less complex to develop for. i assume once the dev's get experience and it get's easier to get to 1080p native on both, hopefully the can satisfy gamers appease.
Actually that's excluding the android patents. Specifically related to the xbox division. The android royalties come under The Entertainment Division.
The xbox division is been worth over $15bn, I highly doubt sony could afford to buy the xbox division just to kill it.

If you factor in that each unit sold will make a small profit, and that the console has sold twice as much the 360 did at launch, it was a successful launch. Well that $1b is a huge factor but after the loss since 07 they have been regaining steady profits from the xbox division. They have put in too much to walk out the race by selling the division, I read that the xbox one's are going to break even or make a small profit for MS, once they recoup the $1b i assume they would be fine. I say they don't sell, it will be good for competition and for gamers world wide.

I agree that the layout is not that great, but knowing MS they will change it every now and then like they did with the 360. I'm guessing by the end of 2014 the Layout and the UI will have some changes which will make a difference in the appearance. Thats one of the features i enjoyed in the 360; it never had a final layout appearance after the launch.
The OS has great features but overall there are small tidbits which are missing from the system. Hopefully that patch for the small features comes in sooner than later.
Layout is similar to windows 8 but the user interface different.
Well i'm getting both and already got the Wii U, Xb1 and a Great Gaming PC; now just waiting four more days for the PS4. Xb1 primarily for the exclusive lineup i saw at E3 which persuaded me (Also a Halo fan) and the PS4 due to the upcoming exclusives and Indie content and primarily because i am a huge naughty dog fan.
I do not see why people are arguing about the sales figures, the fact is both consoles are and will sell better than last generation, even though the PS4 will outsell xb1, this does not change the fact that both will have terrific sales records....

For a higher price in the UK against it's competition and selling over 150,000 units in the UK is actually pretty good sales figures.
So xb1 works faster once fully turned on, though PS4 has a faster Cold/Warm boot.
Same thing happened to me with SKY HD, but it turned out to be a faulty HDMI cable. Once changed it was working perfectly fine. Hope this gets fixed soon

Well all systems have their limits, this new gen the specs of the systems are way more powerful compared to last gen. You could see the difference in game's like Ryse and Killzone. It only gets better after this. BTW Quantum Break IP...
