D1 and 2 were closer to each other because of the conventions of the time and they were both good
D3 introduced the ridiculous power trips, ultra speed runs, real money auction house, rifts, random matchmaking based on difficulty tiers, accessible story co-op etc etc Huge jump from 1 and 2.
D3 took risks and survived all these years because its base loop was extremely fun.
D4 made a world that people skip, dungeons that lack character without any...
People wanted Diablo 4
Not 3, not 2, not POE.
People wanted a new game.
There's barely anything new in D4.
No real reason to play it.

You can have a power trip in D3 while this is bogged down by scaling.
D3 is a fully social game, D4 is barely even multiplayer.
Even if MS buys Activision MS will lose in the end and gamers will have lost the most.
