I dunno why people always say Brawl is laggy.. It's almost lagless if both people have decent connection speeds, aren't downloading/browsing and are in the same country.
I don't get why people consider Melee the standard physics for Smash Bros; Melee was completely different than Smash 64. Sakurai pretty much said that Brawl is the new standard for future Smash games, so it's time to get used to it.

Even the original games were more than "Hold right and occasionally press A to win". Sonic Team is obviously delusional if they think that they can make a game even remotely as good as Sonic & Knuckles.
