like my previous comment, sony didnt wanna come out blind. the fact that they took it down for 2 days without any explanation from them, was that not hint enough to you that something might be wrong?
Sony then assessed the situation and came out when they knew the exact problem and made an official statement. to me they handled it the correct way.

i know it looks like sony handled it wrong. but when it started, sony knew something was wrong, they just didnt know what exactly. so they took their time to first find the cause and extremity of the damage before putting people in a panic. if they came out blindly and said something is wrong with psn but we dont know what, what help would that be to you?
