I enjoyed the game overall

That statement isn't far from the truth
The only games that ever had any emotional impact for me are Ico and Shadow of The Colossus (and by that I mean they were the only games that were on par with film). Every other game I've played feels half-baked in every aspect (music, story, voice acting, presentation)

It's not genre for everyone
I think the games I listed are some of the better examples of the genre.
They don't represent the pinnacle of the "hack n' slash" genre, but they are definitely some of the better underdogs.
I think Devil Kings is basically a fun over-the-top version of Samurai Warriors. It's not great, but it's a million times better. Plus, Devil Kings gave us Basara X, which is one of the best 2d fighters I've ever played
99 Nights isn't that bad. It has some style at least.
If you like the game then check out Devil Kings, Guilty Gear Overture, and Chaos Legion. It's a very repetitive and bland genre, but these all have some unique aspects to them
Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warrior are bottom barreled series. I avoid those at all costs
