They have stated that there will be more side quest planets to visit.
So, there I'd say there will be, at least, double the planets to visit this time around.
They also mentioned that the side quests will impact the main story line in some way.
Nawh, you can bet your ass that the story will still be up to par, or even better than the first Mass Effect. It is BioWare we are talking about, here..
The shooter aspect will most likely be better, as well.
