That seems to be the trend nowadays. $200 or more collectors editions are another test to see what we're willing to pay for games. They'll use those stats against us to justify raising prices again, as they did from the 49.99 jump to 59.99.

Yes it is for the consumers benefit, as well as the developers. The developers can better showcase their work, while the customers who opt to benefit from this potential upgrade will be able to enjoy them as well.
