IMO, the new SKU will be 160GB with DS3 plus a new game from Sony for 500USD. This SKU will have BC support.

Sony will maintain only two SKU. Removing 80GB and replacing it with 120-160GB with DualShock 3 is great.
IMO, Sony will reduce the price of 40GB and introduce the white PS3 with DS3 bundled with one free game. Introduce the 160GB with DS3 and one free game but the price will remain the same as the 80GB. This new SKU will have BC support.
I completely agree with the title. Even at the greatly reduced price of the HDDVD players it is still a certified flop. Majority of the consumers are already aware of the lack of studio support. Even the retailers are informing the potential buyers of such about the product being obsolete in a few months.
The PS3 has better technology and hardware. The 360 is a joke. It has the highest hardware failure rate and the highest number of class action suit.
They are just saying those words to boost the morale of the HDDVD fans. In reality, it is a lost cause.

It seems they are going to make the 40GB the sole SKU worldwide. It will be bad for Sony if there's no other alternative SKU.

I did not enjoy the NG Sigma on PS3 so I don't mind if this game is 360 exclusive.
Europe already aware of the fact that HDDVD only has Universal and Paramount. There's an exiting firesale of HDDVD players and yet nobody is buying it and consumers are returning their purchase since Warner went exclusive to Blu-ray. Toshiba is just unloading their existing hardware to unsuspecting/uninformed buyer.
This article has some valid points. 2008 will be a good year for PS3.
They are just prolonging the inevitable. Blu-ray consistently outselling HDDVD every week since last year.
