And while Hellblade is a great model for smaller games of AAA quality, not all devs can scrape and publish their own games. They got very creative to make this happen, and have pedigree to help afford the opportunity, which is not available to everyone. Investors are required, as is the ingenuity and talent.
This is why. Because the industry has become an investor hotspot, due to the insane returns from MTXs. This will NOT change unless the revenues drop off a cliff.
To recoup the losses from these MTXs, they would often have to charge $100+ per game. And then they wouldn't sell. This is why they aren't going anywhere. It's better to let whales fund our expereand line the pockets of these investors.

The problem, as Destiny 2 has shown, is when the entire game is designed around them. Bungie chose to remove D1's loot drops and table from endgame content, making their Cash Shop even more desirable. When ppl are clamoring for content, they release a dlc with 100+ items in the cash shop. And when the items you can roll on are purposely designed to be the coolest gear in the game, it's a problem. That is what endgame used to be.
