That's because GT comes out only once a generation basically so it has to do big numbers. There is a Forza every year so 5 to 6 games in one gen that sell 1+mil each is around the same as 1 game in a gen that sells 5mil.
Also GT5 BARELY got passed 5mil

You can play solo, there are smaller ships for solo or 2-player teams. The problem is probably running into other crews or trying to fight waves of enemies.
There are no loot boxes or MT's in the alpha, but I believe it was mentioned there will be MT's, but NONE of it will be tied to progression. It will simply only be for cosmetic items if you want to obtain them that way. Otherwise all progression is made by only playing the game.
That's actually pretty good for a game that just came out. Also considering the bad press on performance, it surprising that many people have jumped in and not waiting on more updates.

Hopefully that new map and 1.0 update comes to Xbox early in 2018. Earlier the better!
