I sold my own xbox360 years ago and just last week I sold my cousins xbox360.
I played Halo 3 on my cousins xbox360 prior to selling it and it was ok. It really came back to me though how much noise does the xbox360 make compaired to a ps3. It's really something.

It was EXACTLY the same for me. No problems with offline play if logged out of PSN (before the patch). No probs anywhere after patch.
