I believe it is elongated for thermal efficiency. I'm sure the internal design and arrangement of the components would allow it to be placed on two faces, at least that's what I hope.

I get what you are saying but also note that the PS3 had to do some remodeling itself. One Sony representative even admitted that using the cell processor was a mistake.
