I played the ds version of iv which had increased difficulty in battles so I can't comment on the original version but I'd say vi is tougher than vii. Give it a shot, you may be impressed by character scenarios, unique battle mechanics for each character and important back story for several of them. Best 16-bit rpg imaginable besides maybe chrono trigger and the two are nothing alike.
