I think Ubi had good intentions with this one, but it was too ambitious for it's own good. Some of those side activities, like running a navy, were just pointless.
The same reason people collect vinyl records. It's a physical item that you can see and touch, as opposed to a virtual item that only exists in 1's and 0's. Nothing beats owning big box game with all the artwork, manuals, and other paraphernalia, and seeing it sitting on your shelf.

These free fly weekends does this "game" no favors. You'll be lucky to pull 30 fps even on a top tier PC, and only if you survive the numerous bugs and glitches.
