Though I'm not disagreeing with your statement as a whole, I do want to mention that many gamers (myself included) play games because it's fun to do with friends.
I have always enjoyed playing single player games, but have had the most fun playing with friends. Some of the best nights were me, my brother and our friends all playing Bomberman, Street Fighter, Goldeneye/Pefect Dark, Mario Kart, Rush 2, etc. Not just competitive games though, looking for co-op games ...
