I was thinking the same when I first saw the trailer of The Last of Us. It would actually be really cool if each character have unique special abilities that allow the player to take advantage of when progressing through the game. And you can actually complete the game using both characters or with just only one of them. Either that or you control the girl only and the guy is an AI trying to protect you at all cost (a la ICO but with the AI being more useful).
