I personally found this to be imaginative and insightful. Boss battles, for me, are one of the best parts of gaming in general. I think the elements described in the article are pretty on-point with some of the best boss fights one can experience.
While the scenario at the end may not be entirely realistic (or technically possible in a game), it was nonetheless fun to read.
That's definitely the old release date, as @distorted_reality mentioned. It's likely that they just didn't update it for the mag. Oddly enough, their website lists the game as being released in "2010," so at this point I wouldn't trust any of the dates coming from there.
My *hope* is that we see Deus Ex in April though, as that would be within the window they announced earlier this year.
@Biggest: I totally agree.
The iPhone is just not a gaming device, and can't compete with hardware that was *designed* for gaming. Furthermore, the gaming catalog of even the current handhelds (PSP and DS) is far superior to what you can find on an iPhone, or any phone for that matter.
Couple this with Apple's absurd and hypocritical business practices, and I can't ever see the iPhone even competing with real handheld *gaming* devices.
I started gaming when I got the NES the Christmas of 87. I was pretty young at the time though, and probably wasn't ready for something along the lines of a Roguelike at the time. I imagine I would have a greater appreciation for them if I was.
It's hard for me personally to get into games like this, but maybe I just haven't given them a real chance. I had no idea how expansive and dynamic they could be; it's no wonder they helped to inspire so many RPG's of this day and age.
Definitely a cool article though. I don't think it would be a terrible surprise to anyone for there to be another Halo game. From the implications in this book, it definitely sounds like the story would be decidedly epic if there were to be another title in the franchise.
Thus far for 2011, the Wii lineup doesn't seem quite as strong as any of the other core 3 systems (PC included). Conduit 2 could have possibly gotten an honorable mention, but outside of that I believe it would be difficult to replace the games on that list with what the Wii has scheduled thus far.
2010 was a great year for Wii however, so hopefully Nintendo has some things hidden up their sleeves for E3. If I had to guess though, they're going to be pushing the 3DS...
You're exactly right on the typo! Sorry guys, I should have caught that. Thanks for the correction!
It'd be great to see more classic titles like this pop up. In fact, if anyone knows of a single "hub" so to speak where things like this may be hosted, that'd be awesome too. I'd love to jump on some old school games with the potential of online multiplayer; though I guess that's partly what the Virtual Console, XBLA, and PSN are for.
Pretty interesting read here. It's been a while since I really questioned how we label certain games and genres, but it's totally true that the meaning of an RPG has strayed from the original definition. It is refreshing though that some games are still "keeping it real."
Flaming giraffes sounds beyond frightening... There's really no defense against something like that; I mean, they're already on fire, what can you do?
One of the scariest scenes for me though is seeing something that shouldn't melt, start melting. Like a face... I usually have to look away, but those types of things could seriously have an impact in a game.
I have to say that if games were to use surrealism in a more intentional way, the horror genre could transcend new levels of fear and paranoia. It'd be great to see something like this (even if just for one or two levels) in a game like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or even Dead Space.
I'm totally new to the KH franchise, but the forthcoming releases look amazing, and if they had something like Toy Story, or even something like Wall-E, I'd be all about it.
I definitely agree. The Treasure Planet world could be pretty epic as well; lots they can do with that. I'm definitely looking forward to this game.
Indeed there is... Dead Space: Downfall. For some reason I was thinking of a "real-life" version of the movie, even when reading the review I picture him as a person rather than a game character for some reason, haha.
Hahaha... Interesting take on an awesome game. If they ever create a Dead Space movie we can look back and see how it compares to Isaac's perspective here.
Sorry for the confusion, I see now that a new Kirby Wii title was announced today. If I had known this would have definitely been on the list. Thanks for the update!
Kirby's Epic Yarn is definitely worth noting, and a game I should have included in the opening sentence. The core of the article focuses on upcoming games though, which is why Kirby wasn't in that list.
He's been working on it for at least the past 3 years, and will likely continue to do so through 2011. He actually started as an animator working on his own animated film (within the same universe), and decided to create a game once XNA launched. I'm hoping it releases in time for the holidays this year though; the game looks extremely impressive.
It's definitely a bit early to be calling the shots for GOTY 2011, but I can understand the fun in trying. It's going to be a very tough call this year though, as there are a TON of stellar games on the horizon.
Me personally, I'm most looking forward to Uncharted 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and possibly Brink.
