Just because consoles are trying to adopt it doesn't make it good. The entire idea of free to play is centered around a model that has a cashier following you around wherever you go. I cant enjoy a game that may suddenly decide to charge me for an item I see in a store. There was a strong post on Gamasutra about the free to play model that targets the problem with it.
"Unfortunately, none of this actually addresses why 'free' is a bad thing.

Not only the shitty screen controls but the business model as well. These mobile games aren't designed around gameplay being the core. They are designed with gameplay wrapped around the garbage Free to Play business model.
Nor do they have a sensible business model like console games. They need to kill that Free to Play mentality. All that "In App Purchases" bullshit just ruins the fun.
The Vita could really use a game like this. Its beautiful.
The art is nice and all but really now, I figured the top article would be something a little more related to games than this.
The higher the interaction with other people, the more important the idea of individuality and thus customizable characters become.
Yeah they snuck that one in. Kind of a bummer. But as for the rest of the conference...

Came here to suggest that exact game.
Its sounding more and more like a must have for my Vita. This game looks awesome.
MS employee: "UGH! JUST LET US WATCH YOU!!"
Long live the Tales of Games! Congrats Baba.
Are you kidding me?! Don't you know how expensive it is to develop fish AI and saliva physics on a dogs tongue??
I'll be looking forward to Adams next 'Sessler's Something' to hear about this...
Ah I see what you mean. But single player could still be possible even if the game advocates multiplayer. God Eater has AI characters if you aren't online but you can still choose not to include any AI in your party before heading out on a mission so you can play alone.
Interesting. What makes you think its "required"?
An interesting video about this on youtube ironically.

@MikeMyers
I was about to post a response to that but I realized as I was typing that the core reason why we are in disagreement is that from an ethical perspective, we both have very different views and, more importantly, expectations of the games we enjoy. Thus we can rationalize our points of view towards a never ending debate.
You will never understand how different passing time at an arcade while you wait for a movie is from a cashier living in your pock...
The problem is that the casual Markets "Fee-to-Pay" business model is something that is being adopted by the console market. We never had a cashier following us around whenever we wanted to just play a game in peace. We didn't have to worry that there might be an item we want thats going to be hidden behind a paywall (yet shoved in our face at every opportunity).
Its that business model thats ruining the fun in console games. Dude if you like smartphone games, c...
It feels like hunting action but that still isn't saying much because all were getting is a CG animation. A party fighting a big monster can still cover a lot of other types of games. I need to see this thing in action!
How the HELL is Armored Core not on this list?
