Except for the fact that SteamBox will be running LINUX. So your point is moot.
Steambox isnt going to be a $1200 Pc. Everyone knows that. But it *Could* be more powerful than ps4 and NextBox. They are digital only and dont need to spend any money on the blu ray drive. This means less cost to produce and less cost for repairs and warranty caims (less parts that can fail).

I agree with you that the Steambox wouldn't be as good a PC because of the reasons you listed (which is why i advocated to build a steambox instead). However I think there are some points that may not be obvious that will play out in Valve's favor... even with the steambox.

To clear something up... I actually wrote this before SteamBox was announced. What i was advocating in this article was for people to build their own "SteamBoxes" and run W7, so all of the emulators would work.
But Official steambox from Valve makes things more simple for people who dont want to build their own. At the same time it may have limitations as some of you have described.

Devs dont want people to buy used games yet nickel and dime us at every corner. Here is an idea. Offer full DLC to people who purchase games new and your problem might just become easier to deal with.

ill disagree with you. What is the MAJOR purpose of a video game console? Halo, Cod, Forza etc.. Its multiplayer gaming. Sure you can use your xbox without using Live - to play SP games only. How many people do you know that dont pay for live and only play singleplayer? Realistically speaking - nobody.

I agree with you. I think they will address this by asking FPS developers to include "Controller" only matchmaking rooms.
This way people who game on controllers can CHOOSE to play against other people with controllers if they want to.
KBM vs controller is not even a question. Just take a look at whats happening with XIM (kbm adapter to play on ps3 and 360. Those people are getting like 40-3 every round of "Insert FPS name here").
