It's simple and minimalist, which follows the trend of contemporary UI design. It's all about navigating in an efficient manner that is user friendly and makes sense. I am a graphics designer/animator. Take it from me buddy, it's great how it is.

FPS single player campaigns that are far better than the Halo series: Red Faction 1 and 2. Goldeneye. Fallout. Borderlands. Killzone. Resistance. Half life. Bioshock. Far Cry. Crysis...Etc. In terms of gameplay, characters, storyline, and originality; all those games are way superior than Halo.
I would argue The Last of Us is a much better game in relation to Halo. Storyline, Gameplay, and Characters are incredibly more dynamic and original. That being said, I don't think The Last of Us is the best game ever. I would argue The Shadow of Colossus or Zelda Ocarina of Time to be the best game ever.
