Hey nypifisel:
I agree the ESRAM seems to be a huge hurdle at this point. I also think we might see that increasing graphics workloads could stretch the X1's fillrate to the limit earlier than the PS4 given that the gpu is less powerful than the PS4's. That's just a guess, but it seems likely.
Question for you since you seem to know a bit more about this: what types of visible issues could we see if indeed they decide to deferred render at 1080p usin...
The ESRAM is one of a couple bottlenecks. As the article explained, the ESRAM has to be intelligently used to be useful at 1080p. There's also the issue of fillrate- you need enough raw tflop performance and a fast enough usable pool of memory to feed the gpu (and feed it fast enough) to push 60 frames at 1080p. Sony's machine seems capable with the stronger gpu- it is looking like the ESRAM may only be a secondary concern when the dust settles and developers re-learn to use it. At th...
We wouldn't be having any discussion about the footage in the video if BF4 on the XB1 had performed up to everyone's expectations, I.e. shipped at the same resolution as the PS4 version. People would have written it off and forgiven them in that case- that's what I think the root issue is here.
The XBone is going to sell like hot cakes out of the gate no doubt, but I'm just wondering how long that can last without a price drop- at some point people are going to wonder why the PS4 display in the store somehow looks better, and why they are paying $100 more.
At the very least, you've got to admire Penello's persistance. He's been called out several times on NeoGAF- you'd think he'd stop going back altogether, but he still goes back to try to stand ground. "Resolutiongate" is making it so that nobody's ignoring the huge elephant in the room anymore so PR slick talk is damn near impossible at this point.
Palm, meet face.
Yo Snookies- won't MS get a cut of licensing dues for every copy sold for their system? That means people defecting is not a good look for them. The brand managers at MS must be having a fit- the COD franchise has been synonymous with the Xbox brand for a full generation now. I never thought I'd see that change- but it may happen before the end of this console gen.
Every time I read N4G I want to reach for a bowl of popcorn. Most drama-filled console launch yet.
We need to see the X1 with ambient occlusion ON. That said, the resolution differences will still be apparent in scenes with lots of fine detail that can cause jaggies.
Maybe it's just me but I'm just glad to see that we're actually getting shooters that draw at true HD resolutions with legit 60FPS stable performance. That was promised to us last gen. The console versions look really true to the PC.
Old article is old. This is from back in March. Plus, I'm sure Gamestop will clean up this holiday season.
900p isn't so bad as long as the framerate is rock solid at 60. Framerate is key for shooters. If this was an exclusive, people would be right to demand 1080p, though
I'm with Crab. Smart money says MS and IW should NEVER, ever let this happen. An inferior port would be a stain on both of their brands. Like it or not, the COD community was built around the XBox brand.
But keep eating that popcorn, boys, this could get interesting.
MS may not say anything about this until the very last minute. It may not matter much. COD:G is based on a last gen engine- even the high res videos look like something that could have come out on the PS3 last year. Plus, supposedly the X1 has an upscaler that might make the visuals look like native 1080p in practice. Honestly- why do we care? COD is not a very pretty looking game in comparison to other AAA shooters. 1080p will just stop it from looking old.
Technically speaking, the consoles are based on less than state of the art hardware at this point, but it doesn't matter. Even if development tools allow pc devs to code to the metal like console devs, the big selling points of consoles are 1) A static hardware configuration that always works, 2) Ease of use and 3) The cost as compared to the experience- it's relatively cheap and easy to play great games on consoles. That is why they exist.
To call them obsolete is to...
Once you've experienced 60fps and high detail, it's hard to go back to playing games that perform below that level. A consistently high framerate is definitely less fatiguing to the eyes over time, for me anyhow. A game with no framerate dips and responsive, lag free controls is a better experience IMO.
Something tells me this article is tongue in cheek. There aren't that many WiiU games I would mistake for PS4/XB1 games.
YouTube is going to be filled with "top 10 WTF BF4 OMG LOL moments" videos thanks to the new consoles
@Lykon:
You do realize that you can hook a computer up to an HDTV with an HDMI cable, just like a console, right? Add a wireless controller and you've basically got a next gen game console.
Dude, if set pieces and scripted events in single player are the only real hiccups, great. I couldn't care less. If I even get the game I'll play the SP for like an hour to get the hang of the controls and then get on MP. Ain't nobody got time for that SP sh*t haha.
