It's not about best original game, but instead, it's about best overall game. Originality has nothing to do with it, fun does. If you think Heavy Rain won the best game of they year for its original score, YOU'RE DEAD WRONG. It won because IGN liked it the most: they had the most fun playing it.

God Of War III is one of the best PS3 games of all time but it didn't even win the PS3 GotY? There were also Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty and Gran Turismo 5 who could have won the award. But Heavy Rain as the winner was most surprising.
And not my personal preference over God Of War III either.

For this generation, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Demon Souls are the hardest games. But in none of the games will you find that you reached the second last level on your last life, and then continue from the very first again.

Sorry but demon souls is not as hard as Battletoads or Adventure Island or Castlevania 3 or Silver Surfer for that matter. There are so many games like those. There's a term "NES Hard" after all, and Demon Souls is not NES hard.
