Yes... and more than half of AKB48 (and other idol groups) fans are middle aged men who know all of the dance moves and songs.
I briefly saw some members of SKE48 (Nagoya idol group) performing at a local mall near Toyota City, Aichi when they were first starting out... and watching the fans was very disturbing! There were even a couple guys wearing the same outfits that the girls were wearing!!!

I do live in Japan! And trust me, I do not watch much Japanese TV... except for shows like Abarenbo Shogun and a couple of the older detective shows. Unfortunately, those shows are normally on in the late morning or afternoon when I'm at work.
Whenever my mother-in-law is watching one of those quasi-variety show (because they really aren't variety shows) with boy groups like Arashi or SMAP (though Katori Shingo is pretty funny), I try to be cordial and stick around. B...
