Edge gave Gears a high score, and didn't mention it wasn't original, or anything new in the review. Edge gives many games a lower score (like Killzone 2), and only mentions it's low score due to it not being original.

I don't know about that. I would contend it's more of a problem of over-saturation of re-done franchises than art skills. Nintendo and the DS and SEGA and their constant "mega-collection" packs are big culprits.
