PS1, PS2,Wii were the weakest systems of their generations and all broke 100 million units. PS4 is the only gen where the more powerful base unit won the generation. You should check your facts. Sonys only 'profitable' division is not just their gaming division. Sony's semiconductor, music, financial services, pictures, imaging divisions are all profitable.

Just counting home consoles for Sony 400+ million to Xbox maybe 150 million? So yeah Sony has been ahead by a huge margin. Pointing out a single generation doesn't change that. In principle what you're saying makes sense, but, games in reality cost significantly more than they did back a couple generations. This isn't PS2 era where GoW only cost a million dollars to make. GoW 3 cost something like 50 million in comparison to make. So 3rd party games with all the risk and rising cost it's not a surprise these deals happen. We wouldn't have got Bayonetta 2 for example or part 3 coming up for both Bayonetta and No More Heroes without Nintendo for ex...
Games can cost a lot so it's not surprising that they would want money up front to cover those cost. Would you rather games just not get made instead? It's because of these deals that we even got Bayonetta 2 and 3 coming, No More Heroes 3 and FF VII.
Sony actually releases games regularly though so the reason it works is regular flow of games and a clear vision of what's to come. Also Sony keeps up support till the end with releases like TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, Dreams which easily could be PS5 releases instead we're still getting games late in the cycle. Unlike Xbox that delayed 360 games like Ryse and Dead Rising 3 to launch on Xbox One instead
