I agree, I'm not 100% sure why but that time frame seems right.
I would like to see simultaneous next-gen announcements from both MS and Sony. It would be... erm... entertaining to see 'VS' articles a year before they both launch lol.
In all seriousness though, simultaneous release would be good for multi-platform developers as two separate console launches would ensure there is a big enough initial install base to cover their costs.
I never stated in my comment that they were first with those things just the fact PSN has them on a console. I'm well aware that PCs have these and many more features over consoles but thats beside the point.
I wasn't weighing up the PS3 against anything either simply stating my realization of features it has brought to the living room. Considering the bad rap PSN gets (current downtime aside), it has managed to push a few of the boundaries of console online play.
The article makes some good points, most poignant is Sony's pioneering when it comes to online features. I hadn't really thought of it before but the PSN has brought us: 256 players, Play-Create-Share, cloud saves and innovative new online experiences like Demon's Souls.
Now I REALLY can't wait to get back online!
I see developers have learned that if people say that your game is going to beat COD there is always a backlash of hate from the twitch kiddies.
This is good PR but Gears deserves a 'balls to the wall or not at all' attitude, can't wait for release!

On topic: I think they made the right choice by not going the LA Noire route. It probably would have worked really well in the game but I worry that it would take away some of the 'cartoonish' charm of Drake and co. However, 4 games out of hundreds that have been able to remain secret until shortly before their release doesn't justify the false assumption that MS always keep games secret.

I'm sorry but I can't help but hate this game. I have been waiting patiently for 10 years for a new Xcom game and, as a huge fan of the series, I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was when they announced it was going to be yet another FPS game.
They can try and make it true to the xcom franchise by including a world map and research etc but at the end of the day they have turned one of the best turn based strategy games ever into more pew pew pew.

The PS3 simply has too many exclusive games on the horizon to let a situation like this effect a potential sale choice.
It's been easy for the media to ring the 'PS3 is doomed' bell (circa 2007) and make claims that they can't possibly substantiate like: "3.60m gamers burn their PS3s and buy Xboxes!".
The probable truth is that this will be forgotten by all but the ardent fanboys a week after PSN returns.
