to be honest I think you've got your statement completely the wrong way around...
Sony came into this gen thinking that everyone would flock and buy the PS3, regardless of what it actually did. They were merely riding on the success of the PS2. When it finally hit them that the 360 was actually outdoing them in most areas they knew they had to step up their game and hence the PS3 has so many good exclusives and features now than it did before.

I think I would tend to include Half Life 2 and its expansions as a single game to be honest :) They're are 3 'different' games, but 5 in total
GTA IV was one of the best in the series - if your looking for 'San Andreas style gameplay' then you might aswell go play Saints Row.
