Imo, Xenoblade is better than any Final Fantasy to date.
Clean slate? hmm not sure. They definitely do need to look at their past mistakes, such as the drought, which they seem to be aware of. I would say don't ignore the shortcomings, but they do seem well set to have a MUCH better year.
While some may use sales as bragging material for their favorite system, the reason we pay attention is because what matter to publishers matter to us. If a great game doesn't sell well, it's unlikely that the fans will get a sequel. Exhibit A: Psychonauts.
Some games are the same garbage year after year just because people keep buying it, a la CoD.
Personally, I really liked Zombi U, but unfortunately, that probably won't get another entry... sigh.
