Well seeing as Japanese Studios are still putting out a large number of games each year, and Two of the major console retailers are Japan Based...I'd say they're quite relevant.
Lets say this, take Japan completely out of the picture and I can guarantee you'll see a massive DIP in gaming productions.

When a store buys a SHIPMENT of more than 100 or more(prolly a lot more, just an example) copies of a game they making money off of that! From the purchase by the store, NOT YOUR MONEY.

Yeah but the battle system still sucks. I cant change characters in mid battle, if the person that is set as the leader dies it's gameover, phoenix downs are pretty much useless and so are all other healing items, I cant even fight goon fodder without paradigm shifting(which is garbage all together), and the leveling/status raising system is SEVERELY limited compared to other Final Fantasies.

But once you know how to get through all the enemies and bosses the game practically becomes a cake walk.
