Sony didn't release it at the time because they care for the hardcore gamer. They didn't want to take a huge risk which could alienate their hardcore fan base ergo they waited for a time where there are more than enough IP's for hardcore gamers on the way. and now the move will provide that casual edge which gives an appeal to all gamers.

PlayStation 3 = Both.
