What went wrong? I'm sure from a financial stand point, nothing. From it's veteran fanbase (talking about SNES era & maybe PS1 era), probably the thought that Kitase thought that because western audiences luvved MW2, they should take that cinematic linearity and put it into an FF game. I'm sure newcomers won't give a crap either way and the stupider and more fanatical teenage fanbase will lap it up but speaking as a Final Fantasy fan going back a ways, the vestiges of charm the series ha...
Holy crap, Kevin Sorbo is voicing Hercules. Haha, that's perfect!
Having bought a slew of games already this early in the year, I weep that I haven't pre-ordered and probably won't be getting GOW3 day one (GAHHH College finals I HATEZ YOU!) Buuut, it's definitley on my to-buy list. Those trailers are just epic, no other word for it.
It was definitley on SE's part. I don't blame the 360 on any limitations this game has. It's average because of Kitase and Company's decision to borrow from the FPS genre and thought that they shouldn't make "RPGs" anymore (1UP Interview in which they don't even consider FFXIII an rpg oi vey..).
FFXIII's linearity where it basically tells you how to play the game, what to do, when to do it, for 15+ hours is a linearity RPGs can do without. It's pretty damning that you think people who are complaining about the linearity have only played those WRPGs but people who have played JRPGs since the PS1 days are also talking about the linearity of this game in a negative fashion. But they must be "RPG noobs" or hate linearity (yeah, because they don't like linearity in RPGs they M...
Apparently you do since you're commenting on the damn thing. Nice try on trying to appear ambivalent though.
Uh huh. Couldn't be that it's just a mediocre game getting by on high production values. No sir-ee. Now I haven't played the game and will rent it, but you're just as moronic as the "traditionalists". What were the reasons for these changes? To make it appeal to a more casual crowd? Why hand hold the player for 15 hours before you can customize your damn team and open up the entire gameplay experience? Change for change sake isn't always good.
Which amusingly enough includes you.
Goes back to the old days of Final Fantasy? You're totally serious aren't you? LOL.
Ah the response is rich.
"They scored the game low! What a biased (how hypocritical) site! Man, it should be much higher, why? Cause it's Final Fantasy that's why! Any score lower than an 8 (or 9!!!111) just won't cut it or I'll have to play a game that some people won't like and it'll eat me up inside for some inane reason! Boo-hoo!"
Well, c'mon man. Have you seen that guy wearing the vest and doing his best Wakka cosplay?
The funny thing is that Square should KNOW what it's fans like about the series. What is successful, what they should improve upon, and of course, change some things around without taking away staples that long time fans love. But they don't. They're like children who got giddy playing MW once, said they could do that, except as Final Fantasy, and did it. Oi vey...
Right, and long tunnel dungeons are what? Awesome exploratory simulations of small intestines?
If done well, Towns can add alot to the atmosphere and enjoyment of a game. But maybe that's expecting too much for the Square Enix of the present.
I seriously doubt the bigger sites will give this game a score any lower than 8, if just so SE doesn't "punish" them for future releases.
Uh huh. Nothing wrong with the online community. Not like it's full of apathetic asshats who probably have trouble stringing two words together in front of a real life girl (shock) much less a voice through a speaker (erection time!).
The only reason girls have to hide their gender is because the majority of the population really are those stereotypical geeks complete with nasal voice action.
whoops.
LOL, seriously. I don't think most of the JRPG-Defender Brigade actually read the article. But I'm sure they're the real JRPG fans, David Radd is just an impostor who really hates those darn Japan made games.
Ah the "safe" place of morons. The entire western gaming industry is now prejudiced against Japanese games. Hilarious. Pro-tip: The games may just not be very good, but that little diatribe of yours tells me you take what you're spouting as the "gospel truth".
Just play the damn game. Are the people whining going to lessen the enjoyment you expect to have with the game? Yes? Then ignore it. Seriously, comparing FFX and FFXIII is like comparing apples and oranges. Yeah, they're both the most linear games in the series but, wait a minute, one of those games actually had things the other didn't. What ever could that be.
Going by the interview with Toriyama at GDC, I wouldn't trust anyone at SE to do justice on a remake of VII or VI.
